“Good evening folks, my name is Officer Collins and this is my partner Officer Morgan. What seemed to be the problem?”
Her mom spoke first, “well earlier this year I let my eldest daughter Luna’s father that he wasn’t allowed to have her this year for her Christmas break because he had a death in his family and he wanted to take Luna to the funeral, both myself and Luna said no for numerous reasons, he showed up here to try and persuade me and then after a huge fight blew up, he wanted to take Luna to dinner and I told him no because I didn’t trust where dinner was going to be at. The next day, Luna stayed home and now we are all glad she did because her friends told her that her father showed up asking where she was. Things were quiet for a few months until today when I came home for my lunch break to see him waiting outside of the apartment. I reminded him that he wasn’t going to have Luan for Christmas break, he said that’s fine and that he wanted to see his daughter. I texted Luna while she was in school and told her to come to my job because it is a 5 minute walk. She came to my office and immediately asked why her dad was in front of our apartment. I asked Marc to drop off our youngest daughter to my job in case he was still there. That’s when Marc called you guys about the threats.” Officer Collins looked shocked by everything and asked, “Okay, so Marc can I have what happened on your side?”
Marc started, “When my wife told me that Blake, Luna’s father, was in front of the apartment when she was at lunch. I was going to come over just in case she needed backup if he wanted to argue with her again about Luna not going with him this Christmas break. She told me that she handled it like a normal adult. She sent me a text when Luna came to her office saying that Blake was still there and to drop off Kennedy, our youngest to her in case things went wrong. I dropped off Kennedy to my wife at her job and came back here. I asked Blake why was he here? He said that he wanted to see Luna and see if he could take her out to dinner. I wasn’t going to let him see Luna at that moment. I lied to Blake and said that she was at a friend’s house for the start of Christmas break sleepover. He asked me when she was coming back and I didn’t answer. I told Blake that he should head back home and he decided to act tough saying ‘don’t tell me what to do, I want to see my daughter right now. What is the address of this friend’s sleepover?’ I told Blake that he would need to ask my wife if she knew that information, another lie. ‘Marc, I will f**k you up because I know you’re lying you stupid a**hole.’ I told Blake that he needs to calm down that we had neighbors, he clearly didn’t care by screaming, ‘don’t make me f**k you up, I already want to kick your a** for telling my daughter about how to be a woman. Who the f**k gave you that f**king right to give her that information.’ I was more confused as to what was going on, so I told him that I was going to call the cops if he didn’t leave now. He got more extremely angry, ‘you call the cops, I will f**k you and that b**ch of a wife you have because you don’t deserve to have my daughter in your lives. I will make sure you will never see my daughter again, you pathetic piece of crap.’ That was when I called you guys because I wasn’t a fan of him threatening my wife, threatening me is one thing, it’s another thing threatening the woman I love.” Wow, Marc that was a lot to handle. She didn’t know how bad it was until hearing Marc say everything that her dad said, she never heard her dad speak that way but she has heard how much he hates Marc.
Officer Collins was writing everything down making sure he wasn’t missing anything.
“Okay, are we able to ask Luna her point of view of the whole thing that’s been happening for her dad?” Officer Collins asked both my mom and Marc, they both nodded.
“Hi Luna, we just have some questions about your dad. Is it okay if we ask you?” What she wanted to say was no but she knew that wasn't going to be an option. Luna nodded calmly.
“Has your dad said things that would make you scared?” Huh?
“No, he never said things that made me scared. Is he supposed to?”
“No, so your mom said that this has been an ongoing problem. Can I ask why your dad wanted you to go to the funeral? And why did you say no?” Big questions.
“My grandpa died but the thing is I didn’t know him. My dad never spoke about him, I thought he was already dead so I was confused as to why I had to go to the funeral. I told my mom no because I didn’t know anyone on that side so I would be alone in a funeral for a man I didn’t know. I told my dad that mom would say no because it was the beginning of the school year which wasn’t wrong but it wasn’t the full truth.”
“How did you feel seeing your dad waiting for you outside your apartment after you told him no?”
“I was confused because usually he calls mom to let us know when he is in the area. He tried to meet one of my guy friends and I didn’t want that because he would have questioned who my friend was to me. I reminded him that mom would say no because of the beginning of school and lied to him and told him that I would call her from our home phone because he doesn’t know that I have a cell phone. It was our personal rule because I didn’t want him calling me while I was at school.”
“Why did you want to stay home the next day?” Oh no.
“Well…that day I broke down crying because I felt like I didn’t know how I was supposed to feel with the death of my grandpa. I cried in my gym class and the gym teacher told all my teachers to make sure that I broke down and that it was normal. I felt weird for the whole thing and then seeing dad too made me feel more weird because he wasn’t that bad. The day I stayed home, I asked my guy friend to pick up all of my homework and he said that my dad spoke with him because he recognized him for the day before with me. I told my friends that I wasn’t feeling well just to make sure that my dad knew that I wasn’t in school, but I was confused as to what he thought was going to happen since he wasn’t on my removal list so I knew he wasn’t able to take me out of school.” Both her mom and Marc were sad for her just now finding out that she knew how to handle death.
“Have you spoken with your dad since those days?”
“No. he hasn’t called and I have been busy with school to call him.”
“How did you feel seeing him today?”
“Annoyed, I wish I knew he was coming but I didn’t and I felt scared because I heard when my mom and dad were fighting last time and I heard her say she was going to call the cops. I don’t understand why he is doing this and it’s annoying because I just started my Christmas break.” Luna couldn’t help but start tearing up, not because she was sad but because she was upset with how her dad was acting.
“I’m sorry your dad is doing that to you but your dad is doing a lot of bad things that are making himself look bad.” Luna decided to stop talking to Officer Collins, she just got up and left. She didn’t want to hear anything else, she didn’t want to talk to anyone else, she wanted the day to be over. She wanted to scream, but instead she just sat on the porch. She looked around and just focused on the wind as she calmed down. She could still hear the conversation inside the apartment because the window was still open. She could hear the officers telling her mom that she didn’t trust if Luna’s dad would be violent again. Luna understood where her mom was coming from but she hated the idea of her dad being violent. Luna started zoning out on the swing.
