Christmas Break was finally here. Luna was excited because she was going to be spending time with her dad, which meant she’d spend time with Laurissa. She wanted to tell Laurissa about this crush. Laurissa is like Luna’s older sister; she was never afraid to tell Laurissa about anything that was bothering her. Laurissa is Luna’s first godmother, but she didn’t do the weird godmother things, she just did the older sister things with Luna. Luna told her about the issues that were happening in both of her homes, because she had no one else to talk to. Laurissa always knew what was wrong with her. When Luna got into the car with her dad, she couldn’t contain her excitement.
“What are our plans this Christmas, dad?” Luna could tell something was up, but she couldn’t put her finger on it at that moment.
“It’s a surprise, honey.” She could tell that he was lying. Luna’s father had a history of lying about the little things to her face. As we were driving to his place, we were blasting our music. Songs like Bohemian Rhapsody to Karma Chameleon with some Marc Anthony songs. We would blast it to the highest the car radio can go to and have the windows all the way down. Those were the best moments she remembered with her dad. This Christmas wasn’t that moment. Her dad tried everything in his power to not let Luna notice what was going on.
When they got to his place, she had to put on the facade that she liked the family her dad invited into their lives.
The McCoy family.
At first Luna thought they were nice, which was close to a year ago, but after one horrible summer she spent with them, cleaning everything, doing things she never had to do before, feeling left out, and much worse. She knew she hated this family more than anything because they were the biggest liars she met.
She saw Raina, the mother of all liars; Raina was pregnant, thanks to Luna’s dad. She knew that life was going to get harder because she would rarely see her dad. Now let’s add a newborn into this mix. It is a ball of trouble. Luna always tried to stay nice to them for her dad’s happiness, but she knew after that summer, her safety wasn’t an option in his eyes.
“When are you due?” Luna wanted to be nice for once and knew from the size of Raina that she was close to popping out this kid any day now. Luna knew nothing about this kid. She didn’t even know the gender.
“If you must know, I am due any day.” Something Luna always hated about Raina was that she acted like she was higher than her. Every moment with that woman was torture for her because she knew Raina didn’t like her. Then again, Raina didn’t like Luna because Luna knew what kind of person she was.
