As time was passing by, 4th period was starting and she didn’t care to be in the class but she would look over at Sebastian. She would daydream about him because he was charming but also because he has an extremely cute accent that she wanted to hear her name said by him. Luna stared at the white board for over 20 minutes and she was given a note which looked to be Larry’s handwriting, ‘Dreaming about your lover boy?’ She looked over at Larry who was sitting behind Sebastian, he was pointing to him and then acting out kissing. Luna didn’t like Larry, he thought he was funny when he wasn’t. After the first day, Larry started making jokes that the 2 Spanish named students are going to fall in love. Sebastian told him to knock it off every time he saw Larry bothering Luna. Luna didn’t need a protector, but when Sebastian did it…it felt right. Usually Luna would try and beat up Larry after 4th period by chasing him till he got to his next class, but she had no energy to do that and she had to focus on singing. After class, she was the last one out of class…dreading to sing in the moment. Matthew saw her and he could just tell that Luna was not ready for this, but she knew she would regret it the next day. He looked at her with the confidence of knowing she could do this.
“Welcome one and all to auditions, my name is Mrs. Carrie! Today is part 1 of 2 part auditions, today is singing and acting; tomorrow is dancing so make sure you have your dancing shoes. Who would like to go first?” The drama teacher was extremely happy and Luna couldn’t tell if that was just her or if she had too much sugar. She didn’t want to go first but she didn’t want to go last. She looked around to see who would go first, no surprise Heather raised her hand to go first. Luna couldn’t help but roll her eyes at seeing Heather acting like she is this perfect angel. From the way that Heather and Mrs. Carrie were talking about personal topics which told everyone that the spoiled princess was automatically going to be in the show because they are close. Great! More favoritism!
Heather did a scene from Titanic, it sounded like she was doing the ending scene, “A woman’s heart is a deep ocean of secrets. But now you know there was a man named Jack Dawson and that he saved me… in every way that a person can be saved. I don’t even have a picture of him. He exists now… only in my memory.” After she finished, she sang the song from Titanic. Luna couldn’t remember the name of the song but she was listening closely for notes. Luna noticed one big thing about Heather’s singing, she would add riffs that weren’t needed which caused her to be on the wrong note when she would sing the next words. She would have loved to give that note but…she didn’t like Heather sooo no.
“Okay! Thank you Heather for that amazing performance. Who thinks they can go after her?” Without hesitation, Luna raised her hand. She didn’t want to go up there but she had no choice.
“What’s your name, love?”
“Luna Ramos.”
“What is your scene and song?”
“The scene I will be performing is from one of my favorite shows, West Side Story and the song I will be singing is No Me Ames.”
“Okay, well good luck.”
“Stay back! How do you fire this gun, Chino? By pulling this little trigger? How many bullets are left, Chino? Enough for you? Or you? All of you! You all killed him! And my brother! And Riff! Not with bullets and knives! With hate! Well, I can kill now too, because now I have hate! How many can I kill, Chino? How many and still have one bullet left for me? Don’t touch him!” No one spoke, everyone looked at Luna like she was holding a gun and that she wasn’t afraid to use it. Mrs. Carrie looked like she wasn’t ready for that for a small girl. She gestured to start singing her song.
“Wow! Can I ask why you chose these two options?” Why? She didn’t ask Heather why she chose those choices. Favoritism is already showing, she couldn’t handle the fact that everyone was looking at Luna.
“This was a show my father and I watched, he loved showing me West Side Story because we would practice the dance moves in it, while also the song means a great deal to me even without knowing what it means, I know one thing about it, it’s a sad heartbreaking song which is my mood right now.”
“I am impressed, please take your seat.” Luna felt like she did good, but why does she have a bad feeling that she wasn’t going to get chosen. She watched everyone audition. Next was Matthew, he looked tense so she gave him two thumbs up and a giant cheesy smile to let him know that he could do anything. She was ready to listen to his monologue.
“I mean, it looks like the right hand, Love, is finished. But hold on, stop the presses, the right hand is coming back. Yeah, he got the left hand on the ropes, now, that’s right. Yea, boom, it’s a devastating right and Hate is hurt, he’s down.” She didn’t recognize where that was from but she loved it. He sounded confident with it. He started getting ready for the song part, she hardly heard Matthew singing so she was ready to hear it all.
“I remember when I lost my mind/There was something so pleasant about that place/Even your emotions have an echo in so much space/And when you're out/there without care/Yeah, I was out of touch/But it wasn't because I didn't know enough/I just knew too much/Does that make me crazy?”
