She ran across the grassy yard and decided that it would be more funny to knock from the front door and not the back door. As she was about to knock on the door, her heart stopped for a split second. Staying calm during that moment with Lucas, it was hitting her. She knocked on the door as fast as she could. She started tearing up. Sammy answers the door to see a crying Luna.
“Honey, what happened? Where is your father? How did you get here?” She didn’t want her father seeing her cry. She gestured for him to come outside. She knew she needed air, regardless.
“He is currently at his place. We went to pick up Paige, and I had to deal with Lucas. He said something that made me feel sick to my stomach that I couldn’t help but cry. I will be fine in a few minutes. I have to just remind myself that I am in a safe environment and that he can’t hurt me now.” Sammy didn’t know how to respond. He looked shocked that she was talking like an adult. He looked like he was going to cry, and she knew that if he started crying, it would be an automatic crying fest, and that would be a lot of explaining to do. She hugged Sammy. She had to assume that Laurissa saw them from the guest room’s window because she came outside confused about seeing us.
“Luna, I want to tell you something. You don’t have to worry about Lucas coming to this house again. He won’t touch you ever again.” Hearing Laurissa say that, she knew she heard everything. That almost made Luna crack again, but she was fine. She thought about what Oliver said.
‘No one deserves your tears.’
She was happy that she had a support system that cared about her and made sure that she wasn’t alone.
“Thanks you guys, but really I am fine. I just can’t look like I was crying because then there will be issues I don’t want to deal with right now.” She calmed her heart rate down long enough to stop crying and smile at them. She knew she was going to be okay with her life, as long as she knew she had people by her side. They all went inside. Her father was already inside the house. None of us knew how until they saw Jonah running behind him to tackle her with a hug. She had to hide her face just for a bit until she knew all the red spots near her eyes were gone.
“Hey Blake, when did you get in?” She could tell that Sammy was trying to protect her from him, but she knew it was inevitable. Her father was staring straight at her. He could tell something was wrong with her. Her father was the type to keep the issues within the house, while Luna was the type to share the issues with others. Luna didn’t want her father to have the satisfaction of asking her when she was already on the edge of crying all over again.
“I got in a couple of minutes ago. Jonah was showing me what was new in his room. I realized that no one else was here, so I thought about walking to the front to see you all talking on the porch. Want to explain that, Luna?” Well, in her eyes, she was stuck with telling the truth. No amount of lies could get her out of this mess.
“I auditioned for the school talent show, and I didn’t get in because I wanted to sing a guy singer. Laurissa and Sammy knew I was thinking about auditioning, and I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. I wanted to prove that I could do it all on my own. Sorry that I didn’t tell you. When I found out that I didn’t get in, I didn’t want to tell anyone that I couldn’t sing. Plus, you have been so focused on Paige that I felt like I wasn’t in the picture anymore.” Technically, she wasn’t lying, but it wasn’t the reason she was crying. She just hoped that he would believe this moment. She was shaking to where she couldn’t hide it anymore.
“Luna, I’m sorry that you couldn’t come and talk to me. I thought I did something wrong. Laurissa and Sammy have their own children to worry about. Paige is just a baby. She needs to be watched constantly; don’t you remember when your other little sister was born? I bet your mother focused more on her than you.” Was this man trying to compare himself to her mother? No, that’s the wrong answer in her head. Luna wasn’t the type to let anyone talk badly about her mother, especially with her father.
“No, she didn’t just focus more on Kennedy. She focused on us equally, so please don’t say something like that.” Luna was showing a different side of herself in front of everyone and she didn’t care. She had a bunch of pent up anger from the amount of fear that came with that car ride.
“Luna, I am just saying. Paige doesn’t know any better.”
“Then why aren’t you with her now? Go to her, just like how you did for Raina? I’ll be perfectly fine with Laurissa and Sammy. They treat me like family and they make me feel welcomed. I’m sorry, but I’m not sorry for not telling you about the talent show; I knew you wouldn’t focus on me long enough because you would make me feel bad for trying something that would make me happy.” She didn’t want to wait for a response. She turned around and walked out the front door and sat on the porch and hoped that she wouldn't get yelled at anymore. She could feel her heart struggling to keep a steady pulse. She looked down at her hands. They were shaking as much as they were during the talent show auditions. She watched as cars drove by. She didn’t want to talk to anyone. She had to think about all the little things that made her happy; she thought that if she practiced singing one of her favorite songs, it would help calm her heart down and get her hands to stop shaking as much.

“We were both young when I first saw you/ I close my eyes, and the flashback starts/ I’m standing there/ on a balcony in summer air/ see the lights, see the party, the ball gowns/ see you make your way through the crowd/ and say, Hello/ little did I know/ that you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles/ and my daddy said, Stay away from Juliet/ and I was crying on the staircase/ begging you, Please don’t go, and I said/Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone/ I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run/ you’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess/ It’s a love story, baby, just say Yes.”

Luna didn’t care if anyone could hear her right now. She just wanted some peace in her head. She focused on minor accomplishments.: auditioning for the talent show, not crying as much in school, not being too afraid of boys. She opened her eyes; she looked up to see her father. He looked like he just finished crying. She knew she would not apologize for everything he caused to her. She just wanted some alone time to clear her thoughts before she could say something much worse.
“Luna, I don’t understand. Help me understand. When did you think it was smart to run away from your problems?” Her heart cracked. She knew she would not cry out of pain, she was going to cry out of anger. She wanted to scream in his face. She wanted to make the biggest scene on the block, but she knew that would help nothing. She got out of the rocking chair and said one line.
“If you can’t see the problem here, then you will never understand the solution that is right in front of you.” She went back inside. She looked around and saw Laurissa and Sammy sitting at the dining room table. She went over to them and hugged them. She knew that this was going to be the last time she was going to see them, or she was going to be dealing with the loudest verbal her father has given her in her years. What was worse was that she wasn’t afraid of what her father was going to say? Nothing could be as worse than how she was feeling. She wanted to go home, she wanted to be in her own area, but most of all, she wanted to be with Oliver. She was ready for what was going to come next.
Her father came back inside. He looked at Luna and just walked away. He said nothing, no gesture of ‘Let’s go. Now.’ She didn’t know how to respond. It confused her. She was expecting a full name call out to get your butt back home; instead, she got nothing. She didn’t know what to expect, but weirdly enough, she was okay not knowing. She was fine with it. She hoped her father wasn’t packing her stuff up to take her back to her mom’s, but she would have been okay with that as well. She sat at the dining room table. Both Laurissa and Sammy gave her the look of ‘go talk to him.’ She slowly walked toward his house, looking back at Laurissa’s place. They were looking at her from the backdoor to make sure she got there safely, which was odd because she was a grassy field away from both houses.
