When they got to his house, it wasn’t even a house, it was half a house. It felt like she was looking at something that was going to be bigger on the inside. She went inside, she lied to herself. It was tiny. Her room at her mom’s house was bigger than the whole place. She wanted to say something, and she knew that she had to say a compliment. She had nothing.
“Wow! It’s very cozy.” Liar!
“Ain’t it. If you need to use my computer for homework, it's over there near the kitchen.” Homework? Guess, she forgot to tell him that she finished it all yesterday with mom. She wanted to laugh but she knew that would cause a fight between them. She would probably use the computer to message Oliver to see how he was doing but she knew that wasn’t the best option for herself. She had to wait to see him, she had to wait to tell him that she loved him.
“Thanks dad, but I didn’t get homework this Christmas break. My teachers said that if anyone had missing homework that would be their Christmas break homework, but I never missed any of my homework. I am good to go, thank you though.” What a good lie, she should probably stop that because pathological lying might be in her future.
“Oh look at you! I’m proud of you for staying on top of your homework or is it your mother that stays on top of it.”
“No, it’s me. I get home before everyone so I do my homework before I have to walk Chewie and then everyone comes home.”
“You stay home alone there?” Uh oh! Where is he going with this? What is so wrong with Luna staying home alone?
“Yeah, the bus drops us off at the front building and then I walk home with my friends, then I just do my own thing. I usually practice singing during that time. If I feel weird being alone, mom’s job is a 10 minute walk from the apartment. I have a good time when I am home alone.” Nothing Luna just said was a lie, if anything she felt like she overshared.
“And your mother is okay with that?”
“Yes, as she said I trust you not to burn down the apartment.” Luna giggled thinking about it because she was always scared that she would burn the house down especially when her mom said that she can make her own breakfast before school.
“I will need to talk with her about that because you are too young to be staying home alone. What are you going to do when someone breaks in?” WHAT?! For starters, Luna could see the issue here but the funny thing is, they have a dog gate that gets stuck all the time so she would hear someone trying to break in just from the dog gate alone, also she lives on the second floor.
“We have a landline, I will call 9-1-1, tell them my address and then I call mom to come home. I would be fine, and plus we are on the second floor I would see when someone comes upstairs before they pass Chewie’s gate. You don’t need to worry.” Landline? It's better than her saying she has a cell phone because then it's the topic of why don’t I have your number?
“I’m just saying, you’re too young to be staying home alone.”
“Why does it matter?”
“What matters is your safety and I am worried that you staying home alone could cause issues.”
“What? You know what, just have that chat with mom because that makes no sense.”
“Of course it doesn’t because you are a child, you still have so much growing up to do.” BITE YOUR TONGUE LUNA AND WALK AWAY! She could feel her blood boiling already and she has her mother’s attitude when it came to this issue. Luna doesn’t like to be treated younger than she is.
“Okay dad.” Shut down!
She stayed quiet for a while because she could feel the argument happening. She focused on the fact that she didn’t unpack then again she didn’t know where the closet was to hang her clothes. She looked around the tiny house and wished that she had Laurissa. She wanted to be with Laurissa and Sammy more than anything.
